I want to talk in this newsletter about the pet industry. I want to share with you some stats about how huge this market is . In the U.S. over 60% of household have some sort of pet . Over 45 million households have a dog and over 38 million have a cat.

These two pets being the largest percentage of pets  people love and adore and have in their house.
Of course other pets which includes birds and fish and even reptiles share space in peoples home.

The pet food industry is worth over 17 Billion dollars (2009) and the pet service industries like grooming etc is over the three Billion dollars. So you can see this is an industry with much potential but also a massive amount of competition. But you don’t need to create a huge pet food industry to get into this market .

In the pet snack industry there are many home based kitchen baking gourmet pet treats . Organic and health dog treats is a growing trend among pet owners and baking these treats for this growing need is something worth looking at .

Two guys that have shown that this is really worth getting into is Chris Trombley and Doug Bertram who both have extensive experience in the pet industry. Just one of Chris’s Treats Sold More Than $1,000,000 in Only 3 Months.

They have created are Business Guide showing you how to do this and give you over 150 specially designed recipes by experts in Pet Nutrition that will enhance the health and well-being of the animals. Also a Profit Estimator Spreadsheet a fully functioning profit calculating spreadsheet that will guide you to creating a solid budget and track start-up expenses and profitability

Another good small business to look at is the dog walking and dog sitting business.

I always thought that service like dog walking was easy to get into, as no real experience apart from having a love for animals and patience is required but I was wrong after reading ” The Dog Walker & Pet Sitter Bible” this  is a great book for people looking on how to start up a profitable dog walking and sitting career.

Josh Schermer the owner of Downtown Petsin New York City and the author of this  informative book explains in detail about how to start building a pet service in pet sitting and walking. I was really suprised on how much knowledge is needed  before you start up a business like this .

Pet services like grooming  is also a huge market(over $3 billion in 2009 ) but requires a learning curve in learning how to clip fur and nails . But is certainly worth the time in learning the grooming trade and starting up your own service. Some courses in grooming can be found online. A couple from Chicargo has created a set of grooming videos which could be helpful.
